Collagen, explained

Every collagen powder on the shelf hands you an animal's finished product and hopes some of it survives your gut. There is a better way to do this, and it starts with understanding how collagen is actually made.
Here is the part the collagen industry would rather skip over. When you drink a scoop of bovine or marine collagen, none of it arrives in your skin as collagen. Your gut does what it does to any protein. It breaks the whole thing apart into individual amino acids, sends them into circulation, and your body decides what to do with them from there.

Two enzymes, prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, modify those amino acids so the strands can twist into a stable triple helix. Both are entirely dependent on vitamin C. No vitamin C, no stable helix, no matter how much raw material you have.

Copper locks it together
Individual strands are not much use on their own. Lysyl oxidase, a copper dependent enzyme, cross links them into a mature network. This is where collagen gets its tensile strength.

Collagen does not work dry. It sits in a hydrated extracellular matrix, and hyaluronic acid is what keeps that matrix full. It is the difference between plump and brittle.
The catch: your body only ever runs at the speed of whatever it is missing. Plenty of amino acids and no vitamin C gets you nowhere.
What happens when a cofactor goes missing

Does plant based collagen support really work?

How long until I notice anything?
