Your Tendons Are Training Too: Why Building Collagen Is a Team Sport
Muscle gets the glory. Tendons, ligaments and joints take the load. Here's how your body actually makes collagen, and why "just add amino acids" is only a small part of the story.
The quiet bottleneck in your training
Ask most athletes what limits their training and they'll say fitness, time or motivation. Ask a physio and you'll often hear something different: connective tissue.
Muscle adapts quickly. It has a rich blood supply and responds to a hard week within days. Tendons, ligaments and cartilage have a much leaner blood supply and turn over more slowly. That's why a runner can feel ready to ramp up mileage while the Achilles is still catching up, and why the classic "too much, too soon" injury story keeps repeating.
The thread running through all of it is collagen, the main structural protein in tendon, ligament, skin and the scaffolding around your joints. It's the rope that holds the whole system together.
Collagen is built, not just eaten
It's tempting to think of collagen like a bag of bricks: eat collagen, get collagen. Biology is more of a construction site. Your body assembles its own collagen from raw materials, and it needs several things to be on site at the same time.
The collagen build crew
- Amino acids. Collagen is rich in glycine and proline, and also contains hydroxyproline and lysine. These are the building blocks.
- Vitamin C. It's the essential cofactor for the enzymes (prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase) that stabilise collagen's triple-helix shape. Without enough of it, the rope can't twist properly.
- Copper. It's needed by lysyl oxidase, the enzyme that cross-links collagen fibres into strong, mature tissue.
- Minerals such as magnesium. They support the enzyme activity and the recovery environment around the tissue.
- A gut that absorbs well. None of the above helps if it doesn't get across the gut wall and into circulation.
That's the idea behind the line we love from the Kakadu Collagen graphic: amino acids alone do not make collagen. They're one of the seven things on the job site, not the whole crew.
Where the gut comes in
Hard training is tough on the gut. During intense exercise, blood is diverted towards working muscle and away from the digestive system, and that can leave the gut lining under stress. If absorption is compromised, so is the delivery of everything your connective tissue needs.
This is the "gut-skin axis" idea you'll see on the Kakadu Collagen pouch: how well you absorb and how settled your gut is shows up in how you recover, and often in how your skin looks and feels too. It's an area of growing research interest, which is why we've built a probiotic strain (Lactobacillus casei) and a fermented Kakadu plum into the formula rather than treating collagen as only a protein problem.
Meet Kakadu Collagen: the build crew in a sachet
Kakadu Collagen is a plant-based, ready-to-drink 30 mL sachet designed around that build-crew idea. Instead of delivering pre-formed animal collagen, it supplies the ingredients your body uses to make its own.
| Ingredient | What it's there for |
|---|---|
|
Free-form amino acids Glycine (300 mg), proline, hydroxyproline, lysine, arginine |
Core building blocks of collagen. Free-form amino acids need no further breakdown before the body can use them. |
| Acerola cherry + fermented Kakadu plum | Natural sources of vitamin C, the cofactor that drives collagen's triple-helix assembly. Kakadu plum is an Australian native famed for its vitamin C content. |
| Copper | Supports the cross-linking that turns raw fibres into mature collagen and elastin. |
| Aquamin® Mg | A marine multi-mineral source of magnesium with 70+ trace minerals, supporting enzyme activity and recovery. |
| Hyaluronic acid (120 mg) | A water-binding component of the tissue matrix, supporting skin and joint hydration. |
| Grape skin + green tea polyphenols | Antioxidants that help protect the collagen you already have from oxidative wear and tear. |
| L. casei + sprouted buckwheat + shiitake | A probiotic strain for gut barrier and absorption support, plus B-vitamins and supportive botanicals. |
Amounts are approximate, per 30 mL sachet. Always check the product label for current declarations.
Who is it for?
Hybrid and HYROX athletes who pile on running, sled work, wall balls and lifting, and ask a lot of their tendons and joints.
Runners who want to support the tissue that does the repetitive pounding, week after week.
Anyone thinking about the long game. Natural collagen production declines with age, so the habits you build in your 30s and 40s matter for how you move in your 60s.
Plant-based eaters who want a collagen-support option without bovine or marine ingredients.
How to use it: tear, drink, go
One 30 mL sachet a day, straight or mixed into water. The most important part is consistency. Collagen synthesis is cumulative, so think in weeks and months, not a single session.
A simple daily stack
- Morning: Kakadu Collagen alongside Super Juice for extra polyphenol and micronutrient coverage.
- After training: Phyto-Fusion plant protein for overall amino-acid sufficiency.
- Every day: Gut Guardian or L-Glutamine for gut barrier support, because absorption is where it all starts.
The takeaway
Strong athletes aren't only built from strong muscles. They're built from tissue that can take the work, recover, and keep doing it. Collagen is a big part of that, and your body builds it from a full crew of nutrients, not a single ingredient.
Kakadu Collagen is our take on giving that crew everything it needs, in a sachet you can tear open anywhere.
