THE PHYBA™ PERFORMANCE PODCAST E016 - JAMES NEWBURY

Ty Nicholson

Episode Summary:

In this episode, the boys sit down to discuss a plethora of holistic interventions for high performance in the personal and professional arena.

Naturopath Matt Legge breaks down numerous compounds, such as butyrate, tributyrin, citrulline, and riboflavin, which confer positive effects to mitochondrial and microbiome function throughout the body.

In conjunction with this discussion, Matt takes time to breakdown how these nutrients can be used with holistic consideration for supplementation, such that diet and lifestyle still hold great import in the discussion, while supplements are not used as a bandaid for poor living.

Key Definitions:

Butyrate:
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced at high concentrations in the colon, via microbiota-mediated metabolism of dietary fiber. It is the main energy source of colonocytes, which oxidize butyrate to acetyl-CoA.

Tributyrin:
Tributyrin (TB) is a butyric acid precursor and has a key role in anti-inflammatory and intestinal barrier repair effects by slowly releasing butyric acid.

Citrulline:
L-Citrulline, or simply just citrulline, is a nonessential amino acid. It is efficiently turned into L-arginine in the kidneys after supplementation, which makes it a good choice for increasing nitric oxide synthesis in the body.

Arginine:
L-arginine is an amino acid that helps the body build protein. Your body usually makes all the L-arginine it needs. L-arginine is also found in most protein-rich foods, including fish, red meat, poultry, soy, whole grains, beans and dairy products.

    PCOS:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal condition. PCOS can be associated with problems such as irregular menstrual cycles, excessive facial and body hair growth, acne, obesity, reduced fertility and increased risk of diabetes.

    Niacinamide:
Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B3. It's found in many foods including meat, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables, and cereals. Niacinamide is required for the function of fats and sugars in the body and to maintain healthy cells.

    Riboflavin:
Riboflavin is a key component of coenzymes involved with the growth of cells, energy production, and the breakdown of fats, steroids, and medications.

    Urolithins:
Urolithin A is generated by the gut microflora as a natural food metabolite of ellagitannins, a class of compounds found in the pomegranate and other fruits and nuts.

    Schisandra
Schisandra berry is the fruit of a plant native to northern china, which has been shown to balance hormones by improving our ability to deal with stresses—both physical and psychological. Studies have shown Schisandra to be protective of the heart, cognitive function and psychiatric disorders. Its high concentration of antioxidants helps fight free radical damage and lower inflammatory response.
